Landover Hills Chronicle

Letter From the Mayor

There has been further development in the matter concerning the infamous Stardust Inn located on the corner of Annapolis Road (MD Route 450) and Veterans Parkway (MD Route 410).

The Board of License Commissioners for Prince George's County, located at 5012 Rhode Island Avenue, Hyattsville, MD 20781, has considered and approved a request by the Stardust Inn, to stay the Boards's March 23, 2004, decision denying renewal of the Stardust Inn's Class B, Beer, Wine and Liquor License for 2004-05; pending the completion of the judicial review in the Circuit Court for Prince George's County.

This action was taken by the Board of License Commissioners without properly notifying the parties of record as required.

This action of the Board of License Commissioners for Prince George's County is considered by many concerned citizens to be a breach of the public trust in that almost eight hundred (800) concerned citizens signed petitions, requesting that the Board of License Commissioners deny renewal of the Stardust Inn's Class B, Beer, Wine and Liquor License; in addition to concerned citizens attendance at hearings regarding the Stardust Inn and testimonies during hearings.

It is recommended that all concerned citizens write the Board of License Commissioners for Prince George's County, at the above address. Comments should be forwarded to Mr. Franklin D. Jackson, Chairman.

The expression of your concerns regarding this matter can make a big difference in restoring dignity to the community, particularly in relation to young people who should be able to live and learn in a wholesome environment.

Mayor Lee P. Walker

The Talking Badge

Chief Henry Norris

Summer is fast approaching and many of you will be going on vacation. When you leave for vacation whether it's a short trip or a lengthy one, please call the police department at 301-773-6400 to request a house check while you are away. We would like you to phone us at least a day or two before you leave, preferably Monday through Friday when the administrative office is open. When you telephone please provide the following information:

1) Name and address

2) phone number that you can be reached at while away

3) Emergency contact person

4) Date that you will leave and return

5) Which lights will be left on and which are on timers

6) Will anyone be going on your property while you are away?

7) Will any vehicles be left at the house?

You should also make sure someone will be picking up your mail and newspapers or arrange to have the mail held and the paper stopped while you are away. Have a nice trip and let us know when you return.

Bicycle Helmets

Each day, I see many children riding on their bicycles and they are not wearing a helmet. In previous articles we advised the residents that we have bicyclehelmets at the police department that will be given to the parents of children that reside in the Town. Please call the police department during business hours, Monday - Friday 9:00 am until 5:00 p.m. and schedule a time to come to the station to have your child's bicycle registered and to receive a helmet. Once you receive your helmet you will be expected to wear it. If you do not, the parent will receive a citation. REMEMBER, IN THE STATE OF MARYLAND, CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 16 MUST WEAR AN APPROVED BICYCLE HELMET.

Unregistered vehicles and vehicles with temporary tags

In numerous articles of the Chronicle we have advised residents about having unregistered vehicles in their yards and on the street. If you have an unregistered vehicle on the street with no tags, suspended tags or expired tags, it will be towed immediately. This means to get your car out of impound you will have to come to the police station and show proof of ownership (we do not accept signed over titles), proof of identification (driver's license or identification with a photograph), a $25.00 administrative fee and a $100.00 parking citation for an abandoned vehicle. After you get your vehicle release, you will then pay the impound lot a $100.00 fee for the tow and $25.00 each day for storage (starting after the first hour of impound).

If you have an unregistered vehicle in your yard, you will receive a violation notice. Thirty to forty-five days after your notice, you will receive a municipal infraction which carries a fine of $50.00. If you do not tag the vehicle and pay the infraction you will be taken to court where the request to have the vehicle removed and to double the fine will be given to the judge. Untagged, junked vehicles on properties in the Town are an eyesore and will not be tolerated.
